ABSTRACT.
Paspalum notatum is a subtropical grass present throughout America, and one of the main constituents of the natural grasslands in Uruguay. An
apomictic autotetraploid (2n = 4x = 40) is the most frequent cytotype. The occurrence of sexual diploids (2n = 2x = 20) has also been reported as well as the occasional presence of apomictic triploids and pentaploids in Argentina. In this study, ISSR (inter simple sequence repeats) molecular markers were used to analyze the genetic variability of 210 P. notatum individuals from a collection from Uruguay. Cytometric analyses and chromosome counts were used to assess the ploidy level of the individuals. All plants from Uruguay analyzed were tetraploid. Intra- and inter-population variability was found both in genomic DNA content and at the genotypic level. Several multilocus genotypes were shared among individuals within populations and among populations over moderate geographical ranges, at the same time, very dissimilar genotypes were found within the same population. Part of the genetic variance among populations can be explained by a broader scale geographic structure which is partly coincident with the traditionally recognized grassland management regions. In spite of the apparently high degree of genetic admixture within populations, groups of related genotypes seem to follow a broader geographical structure in the area under study. These results suggest that an efficient collection strategy for this apomictically reproducing species should include carefully planned intra- and inter-population sampling. A broader scale regional sampling strategy should also be considered although further studies will be required to define genetic structure at this level.

El objetivo del presente trabajo fue evaluar el efecto de sistemas lecheros de alta carga con estrategias de alimentación y genotipos animales contrastantes sobre la cosecha de pasto (pastoreo directo y reservas producidas). Las estrategias de alimentación fueron 2: Dieta (D): asignación fija del pasto, reservas y concentrado (33,3% cada uno), suplementación con mixer; Pasto (P): asignación del pasto en función de la tasa de crecimiento (TC), suplementación de concentrado en sala (33,3%) y reservas variables. Cada estrategia fue evaluada en 2 genotipos: vaca grande (G): origen Holstein norteamericano y vaca chica (CH): origen Holstein neozelandés. Entre junio-noviembre 2017 se estimó el consumo diario de reservas y concentrado (kg ofrecidos menos rechazados) y el consumo de pasto por diferencia mediante balance energético. La cosecha por pastoreo directo (kg MS/ha) fue calculada sobre la superficie efectiva de pastoreo (ha SEP). El consumo promedio de pasto fue 4,4 y 4,6 kg MS/vaca/día (D-CH y D-G) y de 7,0 y 7,2 kg/vaca/día (P-CH y P-G). La cosecha por pastoreo directo fue de 2.685 y 2.209 kg MS/SEP (D-CH y D-G) y de 3.748 y 3.057 kg MS/ha SEP (P-CH y P-G). En promedio los sistemas P cosecharon 239 kg MS/ha SEP de reservas y los sistemas D 1.528 kg MS/ha SEP. En cuanto al pastoreo directo, los sistemas P cosecharon un 39,6 y 38,4% más pasto más que los sistemas D, para vaca CH y G respectivamente. Estos niveles fueron un 21,5% y 35,6% inferior a lo esperado explicado por una TC 39% menor a la histórica entre septiembre y noviembre. En síntesis, una estrategia de alimentación basada en el crecimiento del pasto permite aumentar la cosecha por vaca y por hectárea, aunque están altamente expuestos a variaciones en la TC.
