RESUMEN
El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar y cuantificar el efecto de diferentes alternativas de mitigación del calor (sombra o aspersión) sobre el desempeño productivo de novillos terminados a corral. Se utilizaron 48 novillos con un peso vivo inicial de 379 ± 8 kg en un diseño experimental completamente al azar con 4 repeticiones por tratamiento (4 novillos por repetición). Los tratamientos evaluados para mitigar el calor fueron: sombra continua (4,5m2 /animal) y aspersión (9 l/min desde las 11:00 a 19:00 h, cuando el ITH diario ? 75 o más de 5 h con ITH ?79), el tercer tratamiento fue el control sin estrategia de mitigación del calor (sol). La duración del ensayo fue de 65 d donde se diferenciaron dos momentos: Período 1 (33 d en febrero y marzo; ITH promedio 73,6 y presencia de ola de calor) y Período 2 (32 d en marzo y abril, ITH promedio 67,7 y sin presencia de ola de calor). Los animales con alguna estrategia de mitigación (sombra o aspersión) lograron
menores valores de frecuencia respiratoria y escala de jadeo. Sin embargo, solamente los animales con acceso a sombra
lograron mayores niveles de consumo diario de materia seca. El aumento medio diario al igual que la conversión alimenticia
no fue diferente entre tratamientos, sin embargo al separarlos por períodos, durante el Período 1 los animales con alguna
estrategia de mitigación del calor lograron mayores aumentos medios diarios (38 y 56% superior) respecto que los que
estaban al sol. Si bien no hubo diferencias estadísticas en el peso de faena ni en el peso de la canal caliente, los animales con
acceso a sombra fueron más pesados (10 y 6 kg, respectivamente) respecto a los otros dos tratamientos. Se concluye que
bajo las condiciones ambientales donde se desarrolló el ensayo, se vio que los animales expuestos al sol presentaron
variables fisiológicas ? frecuencia respiratoria y escala de jadeo ? por encima de valores normales, así como rumia e ingesta
disminuidas, indicadores de estrés por calor.
SUMMARY:
The aim of this study was to evaluate and quantify the effect of different heat mitigation alternatives (shade or spray) on
animal performance of fattening beef steers in feedlot. Forty-eight steers with an initial live weight of 379 ± 8 kg were used
in a totally randomized experimental design with four replicates (4 steers per replicates). The treatments to mitigate heat
stress were: continuous shadow (4.5 m2 /animal) and spray (9 l/min from 11:00 to 19:00, when daily THI ?75 or more than 5 h
with THI ?79), the third treatment was the control without heat mitigation strategy (sun). The length of the trial was 65 d,
divided in two periods: Period 1 (33 d in February and March, average THI 73.6 and presence of heat wave) and Period 2 (32
d in March and April, average THI 67.7 and without presence of heat wave). The steers under some mitigation strategy
(shade or spray) achieved lower values of respiratory rate and panting scale. However, only animals with access to shade
achieved higher levels of daily dry matter intake. The average daily gain as well as feed efficiency did not differ among
treatments. However, when it was analyzed by separated periods, during Period 1 the steers with some heat mitigation
strategy achieved higher daily gain (38 y 56% superior) than those in the sun. Although there were no statistical differences
in slaughter weight or hot carcass weight, the animals with shade access were heavier (10 and 6 kg, respectively) compared
to the other two treatments. It is concluded that under the environmental conditions of this trial, it was seen that animals
exposed to the sun presented physiological variables - respiratory rate and panting scale - above normal, as well as
decreased rumination and intake, indicators of heat stress. MenosRESUMEN

Abstract
Anthracnose olive rot (AOR) is the main fruit disease of olives, causing direct yield losses and declining oil quality. Fruit infection occurs either in spring during flowering and fruit-set or in summer from the beginning of veraison to harvest. Conducive weather conditions (rain, elevated air relative humidity, air temperature above 20 °C) and the lack of effective chemical control strategies may compromise olive oil production. To quantify AOR effect on olive oil quality and to establish threshold levels, olive oil was extracted from olives with increasing disease incidence (from 0 to 30%), along three consecutive seasons (2012?2014) in two cultivars (cv. Arbeqina and cv. Frantoio) and disease severity index was also determined.
