This book contains a compilation of offered papers presented at the main congress of the XX International Grassland Congress held in University College Dublin, Ireland from 26 June to 1 July, 2005. It is complemented by six other books arising from the XX IGC as listed on the back cover: the book of invited papers from the main congress and five books containing the proceedings of five satellite workshops held immediately after the main congress at locations in the UK and Ireland (Aberystwyth, Belfast, Cork, Glasgow and Oxford). The workshops were designed to facilitate more in-depth presentations and discussions on more specialised topics of worldwide significance.
The main congress brought together scientists from many disciplines, policy makers, consultants and producers involved directly in grass production and utilisation, as well as people in associated industries. They discussed issues around the theme of the congress, Grasslands: a Global Resource. The congress programme was organised around three main thematic areas:
Efficient Production from Grassland
Grassland and the Environment
Delivering the Benefits from Grassland |

Las diferentes sistematizaciones de chacra estudiadas en trabajos anteriores, no determinaron diferencias significativas en consumo y productividad del agua, así como tampoco en el rendimiento y calidad del cultivo. (Carracelas et al. 2012 y 2013). Sin embargo los diferentes manejos del riego intermitente permitieron un ahorro en el consumo del agua de 25%, un incremento en la productividad del agua de riego del 40% y no se registraron diferencias en el rendimiento en grano en relación al riego continuo (Lavecchia et al., 2011; Carracelas et al. 2012 y 2013). El sistema de Múltiples Taipas (taipas muy próximas entre sí) con taipas de forma triangular, menor altura y sin desgote es un tipo de sistematización que viene siendo implementado por productores de la zona Norte. Las ventajas de este sistema es que permite inundar antes la chacra, facilita el riego por una mayor velocidad y uniformidad del mismo, así como mejores condiciones para la siembra sobre taipas, determinando una mejor uniformidad del cultivo en chacras comerciales.
Es así que en este trabajo se incorporó esta una nueva sistematización con el fin de comparar diferentes manejos de riego y determinar si existen
diferencias en relación a los sistemas convencionales en relación al consumo y productividad del agua de riego y lluvia (kg arroz/m3 de agua)
así como también en rendimiento y calidad de arroz.
En esta oportunidad se presentan los resultados de los experimentos realizados en la Unidad Experimental y Demostrativa de Paso Farías -Artigas, correspondientes a la zafra agrícola 2013 -14.
