New research frameworks that simultaneously address production and environmental goals are required to identify promising sustainable intensification options in high-yielding cereal systems. Here we estimated potential changes in environmental footprint associated with crop management practices aimed at breaking the yield ceiling for rice production in Uruguay. Results from a regional survey were combined with field experiments to integrate impacts on productivity and sustainability at two different intensification levels (average-yielding and high-yielding). Survey results indicate that high-yielding farmers produced 14% more grain compare to the regional average (7900 kg ha−1), with 25% to 99% lower agrochemical contamination risk and similar nitrogen use efficiency and carbon footprint. In on-farm trials, the alternative management practices increased yield beyond that of high-yielding farmers by up to 7% in small plots (8 site-years) and 15% in field-scale comparisons (6 site-years), yet an ex post assessment of environmental indicators shows significant decline of resource use efficiencies and increased carbon footprint. Thus, yield gains were not able to compensate for increased environmental footprint, highlighting the challenge of advancing the dual goals of SI in production systems nearing the yield ceiling. This study provides a simple but powerful framework for advancing SI in mainstream cereal production systems based on cost-effective modifications to existing agronomic experiments. RESUMEN.
La ganadería vacuna ha mostrado una evolución positiva en los últimos 25 años. El volumen físico exportado se duplicó en ese periodo y la valorización de esas exportaciones, en dólares corrientes, se multiplicó casi por cinco. Pero esta evolución ha sido muy desigual. La cría vacuna continúa mostrando una importante brecha con relación al potencial
productivo demostrado por la investigación nacional. Corroborando este hecho, la eficiencia reproductiva del rodeo, medida como el número de terneros en stock final/hembras de más de 1 año en stock inicial, mostró un crecimiento anual de apenas el 1,2% en los últimos 10 años. En varios trabajos realizados en Uruguay se demostró que algunas de las tecnologías básicas para el manejo de un rodeo de cría, ampliamente validadas por la investigación, tenían un porcentaje bajo de adopción, lo que es aún más evidente en el caso de productores familiares. Frente a este hecho la pregunta es: ¿existe tecnología apropiable para los sistemas criadores que permita mejorar significativamente los índices productivos y económicos de la actividad? En este contexto, en este trabajo se presenta información relativa a la jerarquización de las tecnologías disponibles, la cual fue realizada por parte de técnicos extensionistas y productores consultados. A la vez, se proponen posibles «senderos tecnológicos» para intensificar la productividad ganadera en general, y la cría en particular, manejando diversas opciones forrajeras y estrategias de suplementación, analizando su impacto productivo y económico.
