La intensificación ha llevado a mayor producción por hectárea y consecuentemente cuidando ciertos parámetros de eficiencia, también a un mayor ingreso para el productor. Sin embargo la intensificación también lleva de la mano por lo general una mayor inversión, mayor trabajo y dificultad de encontrar mano de obra especializada y la necesidad por sobretodo de un excelente gerenciamiento a todos los niveles. Se le suma a esto el tiempo que se dedica a analizar la evolución del mercado y tratar de tomar la mejor decisión de compra o venta de insumos y productos para tratar de maximizar el beneficio.
La intensificación en grandes líneas necesita un mayor tiempo dedicado al control de las tareas generales (suplementación, preparación de dietas, pastoreos entre otros) y un menor tiempo disponible para dedicar a temas fundamentales como planificar el rumbo del establecimiento (cuando compro, vendo, ¿Qué me conviene? etc.). No menos importante es el tiempo que le podemos dedicar a estar con la familia el cuál también se ve disminuido.
Desde hace varios años en INIA La Estanzuela se ha dedicado una línea de investigación que ha buscado tanto en leche como en carne mantener la eficiencia biológica pero con un menor grado de inversión y/o trabajo lo que redunda a la larga en un mayor beneficio para el productor ya sea desde el punto de vista económico como en uso de su tiempo. |

ABSTRACT.
Due to the complexity of selection in beef cattle where numerous traits are involved, identification of breeding objectives and developing a selection index to improve a global goal is required. A selection index was developed to maximize genetic gain for a beef cattle operation system. Breeding objective includes calving rate, carcass weight, calving ease, feed intake, direct and maternal weaning weight. Indexes were constructed from traits which EPDs are available so it can be implement to make comparisons between animals with different genetic merit. Genetic responses obtained from the use of a propose index were compared with simpler indexes. Selection through the proposed index achieved higher genetic progress in the breeding objective and resulted in an increased economic return to the system. The lack of national genetic parameters for some of the most important traits is a limitation and some implications were discussed. |
