ABSTRACT.
The chemical control of Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) using fungicide has remained an unresolved challenge worldwide. Experiments using fungicides to control the disease have shown large difference of effi ciency due to multiple factors (fungicides, moment and method of application, nozzle types, and weather conditions at the time of application, etc.) responsible for disease development. Besides adequate disease control, the fungicides are also expected to act on toxin production. Results have shown that highly susceptible cultivars cannot be fully protected under severe epidemic conditions. For this reason these cultivars need to be withdrawn from commercial production and chemical control be applied as
preventive measure based on the FHB developmental models and weather forecasts. Presently one of the most effi cient fungicides to control FHB in the Southern Cone region is Metconazole followed by the Tebuconazole. Other fungicides (Prochloraz, Thiabendazole, Carbendazim, etc.) used earlier are less effi cient compared to the triazoles mentioned earlier. Under experimental conditions, nozzle types like Twinjet 60 or Turbo TeeJet Duo have shown an increase the disease control effi cacy. The earliest time to spray is after complete heading, beginning of fl owering or mid fl owering depending on the year and weather conditions.

El programa de mejoramiento genético de trigo (PMGT) de INIA Uruguay tiene como objetivo liberar cultivares adaptados a las condiciones locales, lo cual implica dirigir los esfuerzos de mejoramiento hacia características de importancia agronómica como rendimiento, calidad, estrés biótico y abiótico. La selección fenotípica por estas características ha sido responsable de los avances en mejoramiento durante los últimos 100 años del programa. Las limitaciones de la selección fenotípica como herramienta única y el gran avance en el área molecular han conducido a la aplicación de diversas herramientas moleculares, como la selección asistida por marcadores (SAM) y la selección genómica (SG), entre otras. Actualmente, INIA ha incorporado este tipo de herramientas con el fin de incrementar la eficiencia de selección del PMGT. En particular, se ha avocado a la búsqueda y utilización de marcadores moleculares asociados a enfermedades como roya de la hoja, roya de tallo y fusariosis de la espiga. Por otro lado, el avance en las técnicas de secuenciación masiva ha permitido la incorporación de técnicas como genotipado por secuenciación con el fin de seleccionar caracteres cuantitativos como rendimiento y calidad. A futuro, los objetivos se enfocarán en la estandarización del uso de marcadores moleculares (e.g. chips) y en combinar SAM y SG con el fin de potenciar la selección dentro del PMGT. |
