Congenital erythropoietic porphyria (CEP) is a rare hereditary autosomal recessive disease which has never been reported in Zebu cattle. A 3-day-old Gir calf showed teeth discoloration, fever, dehydration, and dyspnea. The main gross findings were pink-colored teeth, red-brown periosteum and bone marrow, and a fluorescent bright pink coloration of the bone marrow and articular surfaces under ultraviolet light. Aggregates of periodic acid-Schiff (PAS)-stained porphyrin pigments were evident in the lungs, kidneys, and the liver. An intron 8 single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in both the Gir calf and control animals, along with the absence of the uroporphyrin III synthetase (UROS) gene mutation, was observed. Most SNPs were located in the intron regions of the UROS gene without relevance for CEP. A continuous loss of genetic variability and an increase in inbreeding in some herds may be related to CEP in Gir cattle, one of the most prominent Zebu breeds worldwide. In summary, this study describes a presumptive case of CEP in a Gir calf based on clinical and pathological findings. A definitive diagnosis
would require the measurement of porphyrin levels in blood, urine, or tissues or the identification of UROS gene defects. |

ABSTRACT.- The main goal of citriculture in Uruguay is to increase yield, quality, and improve sustainability and efficiency of natural resources. Today, it is not possible to conceive an efficient citrus production system without the use of irrigation technologies. The aim of this work was to evaluate the irrigation water efficiency and growth conditions of different plantation systems focused on speeding up production and the improvement of water use efficiency. An experiment was installed in Nadorcott mandarin with two planting densities (909 and 1220 pl. ha-1), and three plantation designs: ridges covered with white plastic cloth; uncovered ridges, and flat planting at ground level. At the end of the evaluation period, the volume of the trees planted in the covered ridges doubled those in the flat (1 m3). The trees on the flat design consistently produced fewer fruits and lower yield than those on ridges. Covered ridge showed the best performance. Soil water content remained higher and soil temperature lower in covered ridges. Overall, trees planted on ridges with or without plastic mulch allowed a better water use efficiency, and the lower soil temperature promoted a better environment for tree growth. .-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- RESUMEN.- El principal objetivo de la citricultura en Uruguay es incrementar el rendimiento, la calidad, mejorar la sostenibilidad y la eficiencia de los recursos naturales. Actualmente no es posible concebir un sistema eficiente de producción de cítricos sin el uso de tecnologías de riego. El objetivo de este trabajo fue incorporar el concepto de productividad del agua al comparar diferentes sistemas de plantación enfocados en acelerar la producción. Para ello se instaló un experimento en mandarina Nadorcott con dos densidades de plantación (909 y 1220 pl. ha-1) y tres diseños de plantación: camellones cubiertos con tela plástica blanca; camellones descubiertos y plantación plana a nivel del suelo. Al final del período de evaluación, el volumen de los árboles plantados sobre los camellones cubiertos duplicó al de los plantados en plano (1 m3). Los árboles en el sistema en plano consistentemente produjeron menos frutos y con menor rendimiento que las plantas sobre los camellones. El diseño de plantación en camellón cubierto mostró el mejor desempeño. El contenido de agua del suelo se mantuvo más alto y la temperatura del suelo más baja en los camellones cubiertos. En general, los árboles plantados en camellones con o sin cubierta plástica permitieron una mejor productividad en el uso del agua y la temperatura más baja del suelo, creando mejores condiciones de crecimiento del árbol. .-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- RESUMO.- A citricultura no Uruguai tem como objetivo imediato aumentar o rendimento, a qualidade, melhorando a sustentabilidade e a eficiência dos recursos naturais. Atualmente não é possível conceber um sistema eficiente de produção de citros sem o uso de tecnologias de irrigação. O objetivo deste trabalho foi incorporar o conceito de produtividade hídrica na comparação de diferentes sistemas de plantio com foco na aceleração da produção. Para isso, foi instalado um experimento em tangerineira Nadorcott com duas densidades de plantio (909 e 1220 pl. ha-1) e três desenhos de plantio: ca-malhões cobertos com lona plástica branca; camalhões descobertos e plantação plana ao nível do solo. Ao final do período de avaliação, o volume de árvores plantadas em camalhões cobertas dobrou em relação às plantadas planas (1 m3). As árvores no sistema plano produziram consistentemente menos frutos e rendimentos mais baixos do que as plantas nos cumes. O delineamento de plantio em camalhões cobertos apresentou o melhor desempenho. O teor de água no solo permanece u mais alto e a temperatura do solo mais baixa nas camalhões cobertas. Em geral, as árvores plantadas em camalhões com ou sem cobertura plástica permitiram maior produtividade no uso da água e menor tem-peratura do solo, criando melhores condições para o crescimento das árvores. @2023 Agrociencia Uruguay.
