La identificación de reproductores superiores es de vital importancia en la producción pecuaria por el impacto que éstos tienen en la obtención del producto deseado, particularmente en la producción de Merino Fino. Los padres normalmente contribuyen con más de un 80% de la ganancia genética de una majada si consideramos que cada uno tiene la capacidad de aparearse con un número elevado de vientres. El Proyecto Merino Fino, llevado adelante por la Sociedad de Criadores de Merino Australiano del Uruguay, el INIA y el SUL, apunta a la generación y distribución de padres superiores que cumplan con el objetivo de incrementar la producción de lanas finas y superfinas, y por tanto aumentar la rentabilidad de la producción. Se presentan en este artículo los resultados de la evaluación genética del Núcleo Fundacional
del Proyecto Merino Fino del Uruguay. Para disponer de estimaciones de mejor calidad no solamente se tomo la información proveniente del Núcleo Fundacional sino que se agregó la información disponible de toda la población perteneciente al Proyecto Merino Fino del Uruguay, así como de las Centrales de Prueba de Progenie.
Disponer de Diferencias Esperadas en la Progenie para las características de interés económico nos permitirá elegir aquellos reproductores superiores que permitan alcanzar el objetivo planteado en forma rápida y eficiente. Se publican valores genéticos para los padres utilizados hasta la fecha y la progenie macho seleccionada de la generación 2002. |

The plantation and natural forests of South America have been highly impacted by native and exotic pests in recent decades. The interaction of emerging invasive pests, climate change, and timber markets will define the region?s forests, with significant but uncertain ecological changes and economic losses expected. The Southern Cone Forest Health Group (SCFHG), a joint ad hoc initiative run by forest health professionals from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay, aims to strengthen relationships between the forestry industry, stakeholders, academia, and government agencies across the region. Here, we highlight regional strengths, weaknesses, threats, and opportunities to address forest health issues in the region. A regional approach with a strong communication network is relevant for future actions. In the current global scenario of invasive species and climate change, the implementation of practices that incorporate the resilience of forest ecosystems and sustainable management needs to be prioritized in forest policy across the region. Understanding that pests and pathogens do not recognize borders, we call on governments and organizations to support joint actions with agreements and adequate resources to enhance our regional capabilities. © 2023 by the authors. |
