SUMMARY
The occurrence of Avian influenza (AI) , transboundary disease never diagnosed in Uruguay and Newcastle disease (ND) diagnosed for last time in 1984, may lead negative consequences to the economy, the animal health and the public health. Covering the period 2006-2008, in order to detect antibodies against type A Influenza virus, 8115 serum samples were analyzed by ELISA test and 5020 samples were examined for antibodies against Newcastle Disease virus. The poultry population under study consisted in 274 commercial poultry farms sampled among the country with a 95 % confidence interval. The study showed that 99 % of the commercial poultry farms were free of Avian Influenza (AI) and more than 99 % of broilers farms- without ND vaccination in Uruguay- were free from the disease (ND). For first time it was achieved at the General Directorate of Livestock Services (MGAP), a coordinated work with the Faculty of Biological Sciences and the NGO «Averaves» to obtaining samples of aquatic, resident and migratory birds, where a great proportion of them belongs to species that migrate from the North hemisphere. A total of 193 samples of cloacal ? tracheal swabs and also fresh faecal material of wild birds received by official laboratory were tested for the presence of AI and ND (avian paramyxovirus-1) viruses using real time RT-PCR (RRT-PCR) test. No AI or ND viruses were found. Complementary investigation made in 108 samples of cloacal swabs collected from backyard birds located in the main zone of concentration of commercial poultry farms, were negative to the detection of both viruses by RRT-PCR. This research was considered an important input for setting up a basic Epidemiologic Surveillance System for IA and ND covering the major populations at risk and allowing the evaluation of surveillance strategies which will supply as model for the development of the National Sanitary
System. MenosRESUMEN.
