Abstract:
'Williams', the most cultivated pear (Pyrus communis) in Uruguay, was grafted on: three P. communis rootstocks (OH×F333, OH×F51, OH×F97); one P. calleryana (D6); and two Cydonia oblonga (quince) rootstocks (BA29 and EMC). To evaluate the performance of these combinations in southern Uruguay, trees were planted in 1998 at the INIA Las Brujas. The crops considered in this report were from 2014 to 2018. Productivity was evaluated as well as average fruit weight, firmness, diameter, soluble solids, and number of fruits. The different rootstocks evaluated had no influence on fruit diameter, firmness and soluble solids. Average fruit weight from trees on the quince rootstock EMC had the highest value in the first three seasons while fruits from trees on OH×F51 had the lowest fruit weight during the same period. Productivity of OH×F333, OH×F51 and OH×F97 was higher in the 2013/14 and 2016/17 seasons than with the quince stocks. These seasons were years of good precipitation and cold units. However, in seasons of unsuitable climatic conditions, the quince BA29 rootstock was superior in productivity showing higher stability among years. The main concern for quince rootstocks was high rate of plant death which occurred, possibly due to incompatibility which could be solved with an interstem. These results point to the need for further research to identify the best rootstock and interstock combination which will achieve maximum pear production potential under Uruguayan conditions.
