Despite some limitations, sward surface height (SSH) is an easily determined and robust pasture parameter able to explain much of the variation in net pasture production and animal production at pasture. The net pasture production (NPP, total growth minus senescence) of swards with NPP of 2.5-7 cm showed little difference, but declined outside this range. Management of pastures based on SSH was used effectively to control and improve the efficiency of grazing systems, and has application to the higher rainfall areas of Victoria. Recommended SSH values should be developed for western Victorian pastures. |
