ABSTRACT. In Uruguay annual ryegrass is the largest area planted of a forage specie and it is one of the most used winter pastures for grazing as well as bridge pasture during the critical winter months for soil conservation purposes. The most important climatic variables influencing annual ryegrass growth are temperature, moisture, and light. Uruguay has a sub-humid temperate subtropical climate, presenting a relatively stable thermal regime between years. These climatic conditions allow the favorable development of annual ryegrass. This study aims to estimate the relative contribution of the climate on the seasonal production of two ryegrass cultivars, INIA Titán (Titan, Italian type,
tetraploid) and Estanzuela 284 (E284, Westerwold type, diploid) in Southwestern Uruguayan conditions. Analyzed data correspond to experimental results from rainfed forage annual ryegrass production, National Cultivar Evaluation, INASE-INIA agreement, between 1997 and 2011 at INIA La Estanzuela (Colonia) Uruguay. The seeding of the experiments was carried out on March. The experimental unit in each trial was a plot of six furrows of 5 m long spaced 0.16 m from each other (total area 4.8 m2 ). The climatic data covering the period 1997-2011 were obtained from INIA La Estanzuela (LE) meteorological station. Winter and spring are the most productive seasons for Italian and Westerwold ryegrasses type in Uruguay. In an annual basis, E284 and Titan have the same productivity performance. However, in spring, Titan has higher forage production than E284 due to its longer vegetative cycle, allowing more days of direct grazing. Rainfall regimen influences the ryegrass yield: in autumn, water excesses bring problems in the soil labor, delaying the sowing date and reducing productivity; in spring increments in the rainfall increase the daily growth rate (GR). Mean maximum air temperatures over 21.5°C reduce the GR and yield in spring. These findings will allow to estimate forage production based on climate forecasts, and to take appropriate management measures when facing climate change scenarios.
RESUMO
No Uruguai, o azevém anual apresenta a maior área plantada de uma espécie forrageira e é uma das
pastagens de inverno mais utilizadas, sendo empregada como pastagem durante os meses críticos
de inverno para fins de conservação do solo. As variáveis climáticas mais importantes que
influenciam o crescimento anual do azevém são temperatura, umidade e luz. O Uruguai possui um
clima subtropical temperado subúmido, apresentando um regime térmico relativamente estável entre
os anos. Estas condições climáticas permitem o desenvolvimento favorável do azevém anual. Este
estudo visa estimar a contribuição relativa do clima na produção sazonal de duas cultivares de
azevém, INIA Titán (Titan, tipo italiano, tetraplóide) e Estanzuela 284 (E284, tipo Westerwold,
diplóide) nas condições do sudoeste uruguaio. Os dados analisados correspondem aos resultados
experimentais da produção anual de forrageiras de sequeiro, Avaliação Nacional de Cultivares,
convênio INASE-INIA, entre 1997 e 2011 no INIA La Estanzuela (Colonia) Uruguai. A semeadura
dos experimentos foi realizada em março. A unidade experimental em cada ensaio foi uma parcela
de seis sulcos de 5 m de comprimento espaçados 0,16 m entre si (área total 4,8 m2
). Os dados
climáticos referentes ao período 1997-2011, foram obtidos da estação meteorológica INIA La
Estanzuela (LE). O inverno e a primavera são as estações mais produtivas para o azevém tipo
italiano e Westerwold no Uruguai. Anualmente, o E284 e o Titan apresentam o mesmo desempenho
produtivo. No entanto, na primavera, o Titan apresenta maior produção de forragem que o E284
devido ao seu ciclo vegetativo mais longo, permitindo mais dias de pastejo direto. O regime
pluviométrico influencia a produtividade do azevém: no outono, o excesso de água acarreta
problemas no manejo do solo, atrasando a época de semeadura e reduzindo a produtividade; na
primavera incrementos na precipitação aumentam a taxa de crescimento diário (GR). Temperaturas
médias máximas do ar acima de 21,5°C reduzem a GR e o rendimento na primavera. Os resultados
do presente estudo permitirão estimar a produção de forragem com base em previsões climáticas e
tomar medidas de manejo adequadas diante de cenários de mudanças climáticas. MenosABSTRACT.
