SUMMARY: In Uruguay, the agricultural sector contributes with more than 75% of total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of the country, being methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) the main gases emitted by the sector. Bovine cattle constitute the most
relevant source of both the emission of CH4, due to enteric fermentation, and N2O caused by the nitrogen deposited in the soil through the urine and dung. Although in our country there have been specific research to quantify CH4 and N2O emissions in
agricultural systems, there is still no holistic analysis at the farm level in the different livestock systems of the country that contribute accomplishing international commitments assumed in the Paris Climate Agreement in 2015. Therefore, there is a need of knowledge in an integrated way the emissions of all processes and activities at the farm level to identify the productive characteristics that contribute to their mitigation. In this sense, the objective of this work was to evaluate environmental sustainability in livestock systems on native grasslands with pasture improvements,to identify agronomic management opportunities to improve or reduce their environmental impact, and to contribute to the neutrality of GHG emissions by the year 2030. The hypothesis of this research work was that increasing production intensity in pastoral livestock farms through the agronomic improvements of natural pastures contributes to the mitigation of GHG emissions and the increase in carbon sequestration. This hypothesis was verified through the following specific objectives:
1. to estimate the annual GHG emissions and the carbon sequestration capacity in meat production farms of contrasting production intensities; 2. Identify those variables in the production system that allow mitigating emissions and/or increasing carbon sequestration and 3. Validate the LEAP guide (FAO) of environmental indicators (specific for large ruminant production systems) for natural field farms (CN) and improved natural field farms (CNm). The fulfillment of these objectives was carried out through the selection of six livestock production farms according to their distribution of land use (improvements of their native pastures in %) as an indicator
of production intensity, grouping them into 2 groups: One group with <10% improvements in their native pastures called ?production systems CN? and another group with >30% improvements in their native pastures called ?production system CNm?. The life cycle analysis methodology was used and the processes from the animal's mouth to the gate of the farm were included, considering the soil carbon
sequestration. The GHG emission intensity in systems CN and CNm was 0,027 and 0,013 tones CO2-eq kg LW-1
respectively. The results suggest as good mitigation practices in the studied farms: the implantation of grasses and legumes in the natural field, the adequate management of the pasture and the optimal increase in the carbon? stock.
