SUMMARY - A total of 1058 animals from 23 different breed combinations (86% steers, 14% heifers) were slaughtered with an average age of 2½ years between 1996 and 2001. Heritabilities and genetic correlations were estimated for the following traits: weight at 12, 15 and 18 months of age, slaughter and carcass weights (hot carcass weight, pistola weight, valuable cuts weight), ribeye area, subcutaneous fat thickness and subcutaneous fat thickness at P8. The posterior mean of the heritability for live weights increases with age, from 0.33 at 12mo to 0.58 at the slaughter weight. The hot carcass weight had the highest posterior mean of 0.64 followed by the pistola weight (0.57) and valuable cuts weight (0.34). The lowest estimates of heritability were for the fat traits; 0.22 for subcutaneous fat thickness and 0.18 for fat thickness at P8. Hot carcass weight presented high genetic correlations (> 0.7) with the live weight traits, while the pistola weight and the valuable cuts weight had practically equivalent correlation estimates with the live weight traits (> 0.65). This is supported by the genetic correlations obtained between the hot carcass weight, the pistola cut weight and the valuable cuts weight, which were 0.94 to 0.96. These results determine the possibility of using live weight measurements as selection criteria to improve the hot carcass weight, so that the pistola cut weight and the valuable cuts will be improved. Likewise, the ribeye area would also be improved, while the subcutaneous fat thickness would not be substantially modified. This would not be an inconvenience at present, considering the data provided by the industry regarding adequate
fat levels according to their demand, as well as the current conditions of production in the primary sector. Federico García ante la Facultad de Ciencias Sociales de la Universidad de la República Oriental del Uruguay, para la obtención del título de Maestría en Economía Internacional. La tesis se realizó bajo la dirección de Bruno Lanfranco y Guy Hareau, siendo defendida el 29 de diciembre de 2008. Los resultados más relevantes fueron presentados en congresos internacionales de economía agraria en Uruguay, Chile, Brasil y Argentina. También se publicaron a través de artículos científicos y de difusión en Uruguay e Italia. |

RESUMEN.
El principal objetivo de este trabajo fue la evaluación del impacto económico potencial generado por diferentes alternativas tecnológicas de producción de arroz en el Uruguay: adopción de buenas prácticas de manejo agronómico en el cultivo (BPM) e incorporación de variedades transgénicas (GM), en el marco de un mercado internacional segmentado por cambios en las preferencias de los consumidores de algunos países importadores del cereal. Se analizaron los cambios en el comercio del arroz a través de un modelo de equilibrio general computable. Se cuantificaron los flujos de comercio internacional para arroz cáscara y arroz procesado, entre las doce regiones consideradas: Uruguay, Brasil, NAFTA, Resto de América, Europa, África, Tailandia, China, Japón, Medio Oriente, Resto de Asia y Resto del Mundo. La simulación se llevó a cabo sobre la base de escenarios que consideraron distintos tipos de BPM y de cambios en las preferencias por productos GM, por parte de los consumidores en Brasil y la Unión Europa. Los resultados sugieren que la adopción de BPM en el cultivo de arroz, realizada hasta el momento en el país, produjo mejoras en el bienestar de la economía, en tanto la incorporación de GM supondría un riesgo de pérdida de las mejoras obtenidas.

SUMMARY.
The main objective of this research study was the assessment of potential economic impacts generated by different technological alternatives for rice production in Uruguay: the adoption of best crop management practices (BMP) and the introduction of transgenic rice varieties (GM), under a framework of international market segmentation due to changes in consumers’ preferences of main rice importers. The changes in global trade were analyzed using a computed general equilibrium model. International trade flows for paddy and processed rice were quantified for twelve selected regions: Uruguay, Brazil, NAFTA, Rest of America, Europe, Africa, Thailand, China, Japan, Middle East, Rest of Asia, and Rest of the World. The simulation analysis was carried out by building scenarios that considered different BMP alternatives as well as changes in consumer preferences for GM products in two key import markets: Brazil and the European Union. The results obtained in this study suggest that the BMP adopted in the last decade by the rice industry in Uruguay have already produced net welfare gains. On the other hand, the adoption of GM varieties in this country would represent a risk of producing net welfare losses, derived from consumers’ unwillingness to buy GM rice products in these markets.
