The essential oil of aerial parts of Salvia guaranitica, grown in a small-scale experimental field in Uruguay, was analysed by GC, GC?MS and 13C-NMR; 49 constituents (86.6% of the total sample) were identified. The major components were found to be sesquiterpene hydrocarbons: germacrene D (25.0%), ?-elemene (20.0%), ?-caryophyllene (8.8%) and ?-bourbonene (6.2%), whereas monoterpenes only reached 4% of the sample analysed.
